Becoming a Caregiver

Are you one of the millions of Americans who is raising a child while also caring for a parent? Or perhaps you find yourself in a position of trying to care for your loved ones from a long distance. Often, these family obligations clash not just with each other, but also with the pressures of having to maintain full-time jobs. If you're caught up in a situation where you'd like to care for, or be more involved with the care of, your children, grandchildren, or elderly parents, you could consider a career switch to full-time caregiving. This choice makes it possible for you to be proactively involved in the care of the ones you love without having to balance external career demands. (Caution: This is only true if you choose to operate a formal center as outlined below, not if you apply for government funds for one-on-one care. In the latter case, you will not be eligible for funding.)

Naturally, personal caregiving is also an excellent choice for those without these types of family obligations if they have a strong desire to help others. An obvious caveat is that regardless of your personal situation, this type of career requires a particular personality type; caregivers must be dedicated, emotionally resilient, energetic, and patient.
